A taste of cinematic living in vivid colors – that’s the promise of Greece and Sorrento. Tread through the archival columns and classical structures that make Rome, Greece and Italy such fascinating destinations and not just a chunk of history but each a story to tell.
DAY 01: ROME – LORETO – ANCONA-IGOUMENITSA FERRY
We will leave Rome early in the morning. We will cross the Apennines amid the gorgeous landscapes of the Abruzzo region. LORETO, visit to the Basilica della Santa Casa (Basilica of the Holy House), the house of Virgin Mary, and its lovely medieval town. Arrival in ANCONA. Quick tour of this town on the Adriatic shore. We will go on an early afternoon boat trip in the Adriatic and Ionian seas. Overnight ferryboat trip. Overnight accommodation in double cabins with private bathroom (we recommend bringing a handbag along to spend the night on board. Breakfast on the boat Tuesday morning is not included).
DAY 02: ANCONA-IGOUMENITSA FERRY – IOANNINA – KALAMBACA
Arrival in Greece early in the morning (Igoumenitsa). Northern Greece reminds us of the proximity of the Slav and Turk worlds. Arrival in IOANNINA, a historic walled city on the lake’s shore. We will go on a short boat trip to IOANNINA ISLAND located on the lake. This tiny, quiet lake town holds several monasteries. We will continue to KALABAKA where we will arrive early in the afternoon. We will visit METEORA valley, a spectacular place added to UNESCO World Heritage List. We will have the opportunity to enter one of its famous monasteries. Dinner included.
DAY 03: KALAMBACA – DELPHI – ATHENS
We will travel south through the Thessaly region. We will arrive in DELPHI after enjoying the view of wonderful landscapes. Visit and lunch at the beautiful archeological complex looking over the Gulf of Corinth offering amazing vistas. We will resume our journey to ATHENS. Arrival at mid-afternoon. We include night transportation to the PLÁKA quarter, a place full of Greek taverns where you will have a chance to enjoy this country’s rich folklore.
DAY 04: ATHENS
We include a sightseeing tours of Athens; we will visit the new town, Panathinaikos Stadium and the Acropolis. Note: Occasionally, the tour of Athens may take place on Wednesday right after arrival depending on how this stage develops and the sunlight.
DAY 05: ATHENS – CORINTH – EPIDAURUS – NAFPLIO – OLYMPIA
We will depart for the Peloponnese region in the morning. We will stop at the CORINTH CANAL. Afterwards, we will arrive in EPIDAURUS enjoying the view of gorgeous landscapes. We will visit the magnificent Ancient Theatre which is surrounded by a unique landscape. We will later journey to NAFPLIO, a town by the Aegean Sea. We will visit its historic centre, its lovely marina and its medieval castle. Lunch break and free time to stroll around. We will resume our journey to OLYMPIA at mid-afternoon. Dinner included.
DAY 06: OLYMPIA – BARCO IGUMENITSA – BRINDISI
We will visit OLYMPIA archeological site with a local guide. You will have a chance to visit its museum and archeological site (guided tour, ticket to the park not included) which the cradle of the Olympic games in ancient times. We will get back on route to PATRAS, Greece’s third largest city. We will visit its active, lively centre. Afterwards, we will travel to Northern Greece, AMFILOCHIA. Short stop in this quiet coastal town; ARTA, a city in the Epirus region that has a Roman bridge. Arrival in IGOUMENITSA. Suppertime and boarding to cross the Ionian Sea. Night on board, overnight accommodation in double cabins with private bathroom (we recommend bringing a handbag along to spend the night on board. Breakfast on the boat Sunday morning is not included).Note: Occasionally, due to weather conditions, vessel inspection, strikes, fully booked ferryboats or other reasons, we are forced to fly from Athens to Rome, in which case the visits to Amfilochia and Arta are cancelled and a Sunday visit to Naples and Pompeii is included.
DAY 07: BARCO IGUMENITSA – BRINDISI – TRANI – NAPLES
Arrival in BRINDISI early in the morning. We will follow the Adriatic coastline in Southern Italy. We will visit TRANI, a picturesque little town by the sea, and its fishing port, its old cathedral and its lively streets. Lunchtime. We will resume our trip to NAPLES, where we will arrive in the afternoon. Short sightseeing tour.
DAY 08: NAPLES – CAPRI – SORRENTO – SALERNO
Free time to stroll around NAPLES before boarding. Boat trip to the ISLE OF CAPRI included. You may take a boat to the Blue Grotto or the cable car to Capri city. We will get on board again and continue to SORRENTO, a charming, tourist town at the foot of a cliff. Free time to stroll around. We will continue to the Gulf of Salerno. Dinner included and sojourn in SALERNO.
DAY 09: SALERNO – POMPEII – CASSINO – CASTELGANDOLFO – ROME
We will go to POMPEII, where you will have an opportunity to admire the remains of this Roman city which was covered by the ashes from Mount Vesuvius (guided tour; park ticket not included). We will continue to CASSINO after lunch where you will visit its huge abbey where one of the cruelest World War II battles took place. We will visit CASTEL GANDOLFO on our way back, a lovely medieval town located in a beautiful lake area which belongs to the VATICAN and serves as the Pope’s summer residence. We will resume our trip to ROME. Late afternoon arrival. End of our services.
